If like us, every January you promise yourself that this is going to be the year that you will eat better and exercise more. Well 2020 is the year to make that resolution stick - not just for our health but to set an example for younger and future generations.
The Scary Facts:
In 2017, 64.3% of adults were either overweight or obese (House of Commons, 2019)
Over 20% of children leaving primary school are obese (The Guardian, 2019)
By 2030, 254 million children and adolescents globally will be obese. (World Obesity Federation, 2019)
Obesity is putting pressure on the NHS. Simon Stevens, NHS England's Chief Executive, reported “100,000 more hospitalisations in just one year” due to obesity related conditions, (Nursing in Practice, 2019)
Modern living has caused an increase in obesity - people are so busy, eat more high-calorie food and spend a lot of time sitting down at work and home. Obesity is caused when more calories are consumed than burned off through exercise; our body stores what is left as fat. This can lead to a number of different health problems - i.e type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, strokes, depression.
To combat this trend we encourage everyone to think about what we eat on a nutritional and environmental level. This is a message we are passionate about teaching children through ZooLab’s healthy eating workshops.
Introducing 'Sugar'
Consumption of excess sugar - particularly in sugary drinks and snacks - has been linked to the childhood obesity crisis, tooth decay, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. We know that it can be difficult to get away from sugar - it’s everywhere - but we can look at how to reduce our sugar intake, read packaging and make informed choices.
Tackling some of today’s most important health issues, pupils see for themselves exactly how much sugar goes into some of our favourite snacks, as we learn more about making healthy and informed choices. Quite literally hands-on, the road show is specially designed to help deliver healthy living content.
The session highlights:
