Anna's Inside Scoop with Garry Walker

One of the best things about ZooLab has got to be working with an incredible team! Each month, Ranger Anna will interview a member of the ZooLab family.

This month we will be speaking to Garry Walker!

Hi Garry, how long have you worked for ZooLab?

I have worked at ZooLab since April 2019 on a consultancy basis - I spend 3 days a week working from the head office in Larbert.

What is your role in the company?

Learning & Development Manager. My role involves people development, apprenticeships, training, development and rewarding staff. I also head up the office social committee.

With ZooLab, everyday is different! Can you think of a day which was completely out of the ordinary for you?

Two days in particular spring to mind...

ZooLab's 2019 conference, where I was involved in hosting various games with all the staff in attendance and dressing up as a frog to welcome the delegates - hot and sweaty!

The second was definitely the HQ Christmas party... It was my first time at a Christmas party held in an office straight after everybody downed tools. DJ, BYOB and party games - what more do you need!!!

We thought about sharing the photos 😝.... but instead, here are some more party animals!

What is something you love about working for ZooLab?

The family feel that has been created - it is very open, honest and transparent; everyone mucks in and people are treated how I like to be treated.

Tell us a little bit about yourself! What are some of your hobbies?

Oh, where do i start? I am 38 years old. I recently got engaged to my soulmate, Nicola.

After finishing uni in Bristol, I worked in various management roles in Tesco for 12 years. I then used my transferable skills to work in recruitment, training and development for 5 years, rewarding staff with SVQ/NVQ qualifications. I began doing consultancy work in 2019 and love it.

I lived the backpacker life around Oceania and southeast Asia for 18 months when I was 25 and more recently (2018), I spent 4 months flashpacking around similar areas with my now fiancee.

Hobbies include: travelling, golf and football as well as spending time with family and friends making memories!

If you had to describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be?

Passionate. Caring. Smiley.

What is the most daring thing you've ever done?

Well, seeing as I am scared of heights it would definitely be doing the Nevis Bungy in New Zealand!!! You are taken out to a platform in the middle of a canyon and plummet 134m towards the river bed below....scary!! One of my contact lenses popped out on the way down, so I was a bit spun out when I was pulled back up to the top after the jump.

Do you have any pets?

Not currently but I have owned fish, two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Netherland dwarf rabbit, two hamsters and a tortoise!

What's the most unusual thing you have ever eaten?

A scorpion on Khao San in Bangkok!

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

Good question! Tough one to answer but I would say Jack Black! I love his passioneneer, energy and comedy value, plus he would look good in a ginger wig and beard!
